BRING out your teeth!

Tasmanians have some of the worst teeth in Australia - with a tooth being pulled once every three minutes.

Yesterday, the Federal Government urged Tasmanian parents to get their kids to the dentist quick smart.

This year Medicare Australia sent out 38,100 vouchers to Tasmanians, each valued at $153.45 for teenagers to get a preventative dental health check-up.

Families will get a voucher each calendar year and this year's vouchers are valid until December 31.

To be eligible, a teenager must be entitled to receive Medicare benefits and be aged 12 to 17 years.

The voucher covers one annual preventative check consisting of an oral examination, a scale and clean, fluoride treatment, oral hygiene instruction, dietary advice and or fissure seal.

"Teenagers need to present their voucher when they have this check," Medicare Australia's Mark Jackson said. According to the Australian Health and Medical Research Council:

•11.2 per cent of Tasmanians aged 25 to 44 wear dentures, almost double the national average.

•A tooth is extracted every three minutes in public dental services around Australia.

•Tasmania has the highest percentage of people wearing a denture in the nation.

•The rate of 23.1 per cent is 4.6 per cent higher than national average of 18.5 per cent.

•In all the age categories from 25 to 65-plus, Tasmania is significantly above the national average.

•41 per cent of Tasmanians in the 45 to 64-year-old category have dentures, which is 12 per cent above the national average.

"After 45 years of water fluoridation in Tasmania we see no evidence of improvements on dental health care. " Up to 91% of the population was medicated through the water supply since 1964. If the ultimate test of time fails, then its time to get it out of the water.

Thanks for bringing the truth to the Australian people - they have been lied to for too long & the evidence of harm covered-up; it s a disgrace.
We can no longer follow our so called leaders blindly or believe what they say, because they have been long asleep at the wheel & driven us all into the ditch & there are wicked conflicts of interests to our detriment.

All this proves is that the government care about your teeth. You people just over hype everything! ha!

NeutraliDeg (Thursday, 27 August 2009 )
We just got fluoride in Brisbane, after reading this it sounds like a waste of tax payers money!

NeutralWezthebikie (Friday, 28 August 2009 )
Flouride was first used in the Gulags and Concentration camps as a way of making the prisoners docile. Maybe we should ask our Government, why the hell it is, they are doing the same thing.

NeutralWezthebikie (Tuesday, 1 September 2009 )
To Sandy above - If you think anyone in Government, cares about your teeth, or any other part of you for that matter, you really need to do some research into History, your comment reeks of ignorance. Go to Youtube, find the channels Phoneyid and Weztheaussie, watch the documentaries about flouride and government, then see how you feel about the government.

A few more observations on water fluoridation.

There is no evidence that water fluoridation reduces tooth decay. The countries with the lowest tooth decay, Holland, Finland and others do not add fluorosilicic acid toxic industrial waste from the phosphate fertiliser industry to tap water.

In France fluoride is added to some brands of table salt so we have a choice of whether to we are medicated or not. The brands of salt containing fluoride have a warning on them not to consume fluoride in water at above half of one part per million (ppm) which is half the level the UK and US Governments say is a safe level.

Added to water at 1ppm fluoride has been found to accumulate in sediment in pipe bends and valves at up to 6000ppm, a potential injurious level if some of the sediment was disturbed and delivered to a house.

Build up in pipes at 6000ppm...WOW, i didn t think of that.

So if an truck goes goes over a bumb in your street then you best water water you lawn. This just means any eruption that would shake the built up fluoride at deadly levels. I got a reverse osmosis, worry free about this happening to me.

Disagreekrys (Sunday, 21 March 2010 )
Fluoride in the water was never intended to be a substitute for proper dental hygiene. I didn`t eat sweets as a child, brushed my teeth religiously with fluorinated toothpaste, visited the dentist every 6 months and drank fluorinated water and I have great teeth. All the Examiner article proves is that many Tasmanian parents are failing in their responsibility to look after the health of their children. Considering the socio-economic makeup of Tasmania`s population, I hardly find that surprising.

Agreesteve (Sunday, 29 August 2010 )
So after 45 years of Labour government negligence they now acknowledge adding flouride to the tap water will not help anyone who does not look after their teeth properly.
Finally they realise they should have been providing free toothbrushes and dental education in schools.
I am disgusted that they they still add flouride to the tap water when the money should be been spent on improving the water quality - most people avoid drinking the tap water thanks to weird taste, and even the odd yellow colour of the water i often see. It`s no wonder people prefer soft drink to tap water.

Since toothpaste or mouthwash have flouride in them already why put it in tap water - drinking fluoride is bad, the benefit is only during cleaning and rinsing. Tasmania is proof flouride in the tap water is a failure.
